Arts & Crafts/ Mission Style |
The Arts & Crafts style, also commonly referred to as Mission or Craftsman style, is my personal favorite from a design point of view. It's essential design elements include:
Clean simple lines and little or no adornment. The Arts & Crafts movement was a reaction to the elaborately ornate French and English designs of the 1700's (the "golden age of furniture").
Designs that could be constructed by nearly anyone using simple tools (thus, the Craftsman term which was applied to much of this furniture)
All solid wood construction using affordable, local species such as red oak, white oak, or cherry
Rock-solid mortise and tenon joinery designed for strength and durability
William Morris, who pioneered the Arts & Crafts movement in England, is credited with a quote that I use as a guiding principle for my business:
"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful"
