These mahogany bookcases were custom built to fit along the side of a narrow upstairs hallway in the client's home, thus maximizing the utilization of that space. The design of the bookcases was very traditional in style, to match other pieces in the home, and includes details such as arched-top glass doors, fluted pilasters, and face frame construction. Mahogany, a very traditional species of furniture lumber, was selected as the principal wood. In addition, the client specified a number of specific design details that reflected their particular tastes, and which epitomize the advantages of custom furniture/cabinetry, including:
Fluted pilasters were carefully positioned in the bookcase design to align with the window posts above the bookcases in the hallway. Not only do these pilasters nicely divide the bookcases into pleasing proportions, but they obviously mirror the architectural details in the home itself, adding to the custom feel of the project.
The top of the bookcases were capped with maple, rather than mahogany, to provide a nice contrasting appearance and to lighten the overall look of the bookcases. A maple coved molding provided the transition between the mahogany bookcases and the maple top (see photos above).
To further "lighten" the look of the bookcases, and to avoid an overly traditional feel to the project, a large coved base molding was used at the bottom of the bookcases (see center photo on the top row). From normal viewing angles, this detail is hard to see, but the general effect is that the bookcases seem to float several inches off the floor. Actually, the details of the coved base molding are routinely visible since you can see these bookcases at floor level as you ascend the staircase in the client's home. This positioning allows you to appreciate the various design details from a variety of different perspectives.
Cast pewter door and drawer handles in fanciful leaf designs were selected by the client to further personalize the bookcases to their particular taste.
10 feet (120") long, 40" tall, and 13" deep
