Designing and constructing frames for large paintings and other artwork requires careful attention to detail. Issues include:
Does the shape and design of the frame, combined with the selection of the appropriate wood species, complement the artwork itself? Frames should not distract the viewer's eye away from actual subject matter.
Will the frame have to support it's own weight, the weight of the artwork, or both? Large pieces of artwork can weigh 50lbs, 100lbs, or sometimes even more. Sturdy construction, heavy duty fasteners, and heavy weight hangers are all needed to meet these requirements.
Can the artwork be fastened to the frame using screws, nails, staples, etc? If doing so will damage the artwork, the frame should be designed so that it "captures" the painting without penetrating the canvas or affecting it's value.
Depending on the size of the frame/artwork, will the frame remain straight and square over the long term? Reinforcing spines may be required to insure the structural integrity of the frame and support the weight of the entire piece.
The large frame shown above, made from African wenge, was designed and built with these questions in mind. The finished piece of artwork, measuring about 5.5' high and 6.5' wide, is shown in the left photo above. The photo on the right shows the back of the frame/artwork, where you can see the vertical and horizontal spines that reinforce the frame as well as the corner braces that also capture the painting securely inside the frame. Two redundant sets of hangers and heavy duty wires are used to support the combined weight of frame and painting, which was over 70lbs.
Frames are sized to your specific requirements. This is especially true for oversized paintings, where frames may need to be low profile so as not to draw attention away from the artwork. Please call me to discuss your specific needs.
