Built to replace a white melamine California Closets installation, this set of custom cherry cabinets provided a stunning upgrade to the master bedroom closet in the client's high-rise townhome. The fundamental goal of this closet upgrade was to provide elegant, well-lit storage of the client's fine wardrobe. As a result, some of the design details incorporated in this cabinetry, and seen in the photos above, include:
The cabinets are constructed of solid cherry and cherry-veneered plywood, including curly cherry veneered back panels, all stained with a dark, rich burgundy color and finished with a conversion varnish for maximum durability.
A set of integral top panels, complete with ornate cherry crown moldings, carries the cabinetry all the way up to the ceiling and provides a place to install an extensive set of recessed light fixtures to effectively illuminate each section of the closet.
A central bank of drawers in the middle of the closet features ornate veneered marquetry drawer fronts with a 3D geometric pattern. The top drawer in this cabinet is equipped with a custom liner for storing jewelry, watches, and other accessories.
All drawer boxes are built with dovetail construction and are made from fragrant aromatic cedar, thus providing a pleasing scent when the drawers are opened. The drawer slides are hidden undermount-style so the drawer boxes appear to "float" when they are opened. A cabinet at the end of the closet features two columns of drawer boxes without any drawer fronts, providing compact yet still visible storage of many pairs of shoes.
A custom set of laundry pull-outs allow clothing to be pre-sorted into removable hamper bins for washing or dry cleaning. Like the drawer boxes in this closet installation, the laundry cabinet is lined with aromatic cedar panels.
One of the base cabinets in the closet was designed with a slide-out shelf for holding/accessing the AV components of the client's Concealed Home Theater in the adjacent master bedroom. Two additional drawer boxes in that section provide storage for media such as DVDs and CDs.
Other upgrades include solid cherry clothing rods to match the cherry cabinetry; polished solid brass hardware on all drawers/doors; and a large custom-made solid cherry framed mirror for use when getting dressed in the closet.
